Here’s how 2008 went down. I got through IronMan Muskoka 70.3 but I was a little disappointed with my result. I wanted more from myself. I felt like I peaked too early in the season—probably at this year’s Tupper Lake TinMan.
I trained hard last year—personal trainer, triathlon coach, weights, flexibility workouts, spent a lot of time on the bike, teaching classes, all of it. I felt more ready for one of our training races than I did for the one that counted, and that just doesn’t sit well with me.
By the time the race that mattered came around, my training had already started to dwindle, weight slowly crept back on (partly because of my speaking schedule—delivering talks at conferences with awesome food, and still trying to work on client work back home, means that my workouts suffer and I put on the pounds. In 4 days in August, I managed to put on 6 pounds.)
And once that race was over, I scaled back my training, probably right at the time that I should have put in the hard yards to kick it up a notch. Since race day (Sept 15, 2008) I traveled to Australia twice, San Francisco, Anaheim, Edmonton and Reno. My travel and speaking schedule made it incredibly difficult to continue training properly.
So, 2009 will hopefully be a different year. I want to make it down to the weight that I really think I should be racing at (170lbs) and we’re going to hit three major races:
- Tupper Lake TinMan
- IronMan Lake Placid
- IronMan Muskoka 70.3
The reason? We’ve done all of these races once. It is time to put in the effort to see how much we can improve. We’ve been there, and know what to expect, and what kind of effort we need to put in.
